Not the model name.

An assistant, an API and a self-hosted model solve different operational problems.

Choose the shape of the service

An interactive assistant is a tool people use directly. A model API is a component you integrate into software. Self-hosted inference is infrastructure you operate. Decide who the user is and how the result reaches them before choosing a product.

Bring a small evaluation set

Write down representative tasks, acceptable results and failure cases. Try the same tasks across your shortlist. Measure how much review and correction the output needs. A broad benchmark or an impressive demonstration is not a substitute for your actual workflow.

Ask where the data goes

Check retention, training use, deletion, access controls, deployment region and contractual terms for the exact service and plan. Avoid sending private data until those requirements are understood. Do not assume a consumer account and an API contract behave identically.

Budget the whole workflow

Include model usage, tools, retrieval, storage, retries, integration work and human review. For self-hosting, include hardware, utilization and operations. Confirm rate limits and what happens when demand grows. CyberVMs does not publish unverified token prices or model rankings.

Keep a human checkpoint

Decide which outputs require approval, how errors are reported and whether the workflow can fall back to another service. These are buyer questions inspired by a risk-management approach, not a certification.
